Your investigative question: Is the electric car the future of the car industry?

Björn Nykvist and Mans Nilsson. “Falling Battery Prices Boost Outlook for Electric Vehicles.” Climate Home Climate Change News Falling Battery Prices Boost Outlook for Electric Vehicles Comments. Climate Home, 23 March 2015. Web. 19 March 2017.

http://www.climatechangenews.com/2015/03/23/falling-battery-prices-boost-outlook-for-electric-vehicles/

This source explains how battery prices are falling for electric cars, the price gap between electric and petrol cars is closing at a faster rate than people had expected. This article will greatly help my paper because the perception is that electric cars are too expensive to take over the market. This article will allow me to bring proof that electric cars can very well take over the entire market. The battery is the most expensive part of the car so if the expenses continue to fall there is hope for the electric car to be the future of the industry.

“Discover Electric Vehicles.” Propelling Quebec Forward with Electricity. Government of Quebec, 2012. Web. 19 March 2017.

http://vehiculeselectriques.gouv.qc.ca/english/

The government of Quebec has set objectives to increase the way electricity is used throughout Quebec primarily in the auto industry. They give subsides on every electric car that is purchased. A major statement that I will be using in my article is demonstrating the support the government has given to increase the way electricity is used within their province and country. By the government greatly investing in this field it shows that they believe that this is the future and it is a very strong point for me to use.

“What are electric cars?” Union of concerned scientists. Web. 19 March 2017.

http://www.ucsusa.org/clean-vehicles/electric-vehicles/what-are-electric-cars#.WM6zhxjMxZp

This article explains the fundamentals of what an electric car is. In order for me to be able to write a well-written detailed paper I must be an expert of the field of study. I want to be able to fully comprehend what the electric car is and how is it built differently from a gas operated car. This article explains is simple terms many of the complicated aspects of the electric car. This article will help me achieve this goal.

“Electric Cars 101 – Consumer Reports.” Electric Cars 101 – Consumer Reports. 2016. Web. 19 March 2017.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2013/03/electric-cars-101/index.htm

This is a database that provides the basic and complex information involving everything there is no know about the electric car. It is a complete guide for someone who is either interested in the electric car and has questions. This website had one section that was particularly interesting to me, why not to buy an electric car. As well as providing many positive aspects of the electric car, it also outlined the difficulties that come with it such as limited range, outrageous prices and a multitude of other issues. I will be incorporating some of the down sides of the electric car in my article as well.

“Electric Vehicle Incentive Program.” Electric Vehicles Incentive Program. Ontario Ministry of Transportation, 18 August 2015. Web. 19 March 2017.

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/vehicles/electric/electric-vehicle-incentive-program.shtml

Ontario started an incentive program providing subsides in 2010 as an attempt to increase the amount of electric cars on the road within Ontario. The most interesting part of the webpage was the breakdown of the different eligibilities for these subsides. Ontario has taken a different approach than Quebec, they acknowledge the fact that consumers purchasing electric cars in the price range of $150 000 and more do not require any kind of financial support. These consumers do not receive any subsidy from the government so their goal is primarily to help the lower end of the electric car spectrum. I want to emphasize how the government is supporting the lower end of the electric car industry.

Tagliaferri, Carla “Life cycle assessment of future electric and hybrid vehicles: A cradle-to-grave systems engineering approach” Chemical Engineering Research and Design: Transactions of the Institution of Chemical Engineers Aug 2016 Vol. 112 Pg. 298-309

This article is an incredible in-depth view of the realities of what the electric car industry is today and the direction it is heading in. The article has one specific section that I would really like to use in my article. It explains the life cycle of the parts of the electric car and specifically the batteries. It compares the disposal aspect of these parts and compares the difference between disposing the parts of an electric car versus that of a gasoline car. The batteries of electric cars are huge so the disposal of them is extremely important especially considering these companies are trying to stay as environmentally green as possible.

Roman, Harry T. “The Electric Cars Challenge.” Technology and Engineering Teacher. September 2011. Volume 71, Pages-22-24.

This article examines the challenges with the electric car (in 2011) and focuses on what direction the market must move in order to be successful. The main direction of the article is not what interested me. This article started with an introduction explaining how Thomas Edison had predicted that gasoline cars will use all of our natural gas resource and that we will have to resort to another alternative. He had built an electric engine him self that worked successfully. The article provides some very useful history on the electric car that I will definitely be using.

Parrot, Vicky. “ DIESEL IS EVIL, but is electric the future? With diesel looking increasingly outdated, it might be time for fleets to switch to eco-friendlier company cars.” Fleet Cars February 2016 Page 44-46

This article examines the problems with diesel cars and explains how there is no future for them, it does not say that the electric car is necessarily the future but it is a good stepping-stone. Volkswagen is the worlds largest car company and they have yet to come out with a fully electric car. They control a huge portion of the market and can influence the direction that the market moves. This article explains some of the issues that they have encountered with the electric car. I want to know why the biggest car companies have not made a greater effort to create electric cars and this article outlines some of the reasons.

Abdul-Maticn, Ibrahim “Are electric care really that green” PC Magazine September 2013 Pages 43-46

There is stigma that comes with electric and hybrid cars that “they are not actually helping the environment” this article explains why that stigma is and why people need to accept to movement. This article has many facts that show the progression in the purchasing of electric cars. Tesla sales have been beating the sales of similar priced sedan cars from BMW, Audi and Mercedes.

Tim Lambert. “A Brief History of Transport.” A History of Transportation. 2014. Web. 19 March 2017.

http://www.localhistories.org/transport.html

This article explains the entire history of transportation. It examines the evolution of how we have built engines and how transportation has progressed with out society. I will be using this information in my introduction to my article. I believe that it will provide for a strong hook and help me introduce my topic.
